From Sevenoaks offices to period and larger detached homes, plan the painting around the rooms, features and finishes already there.

Start with the working parts of Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks includes offices, shops and other business premises as well as a varied residential setting. Office painting is our main service, alongside other commercial and domestic decorating. A workspace brief might involve a reception, consulting or meeting room, or the corridors between them. The chosen finish should reflect the surfaces and use rather than an assumed town-wide style. Identify which rooms are private, which receive visitors and which can be made available for painting. Eric Purnell is based in Swanley and can discuss the painting you have in mind using the details of your premises. When describing the rooms, include their ceilings, doors and other woodwork so these can be considered alongside the walls.

Business spaces within established buildings

An office in an older building may have different ceiling heights, window surrounds and room divisions from a modern open-plan space. Those features affect the amount of painting and the access needed even when floor areas look similar. List painted woodwork and any decorative mouldings instead of treating them as minor extras to the walls. Existing cracks, stains or uncertain coatings should be noted for assessment. The painting work does not automatically include structural repair or specialist conservation work. Where a property has restrictions affecting alterations or finishes, establish those requirements with the responsible party before a decorating specification is agreed. The room’s real condition remains more useful than assumptions based on its appearance.

Period homes and individual details

Many Sevenoaks homes have period character, while larger detached houses create opportunities for broader domestic projects. Rooms with cornices, panel doors or substantial window surrounds contain more detailed painted elements than a simple wall list suggests. Describe those features and explain which you want retained or refreshed. Age alone is not evidence that a coating has failed, nor does a period setting mean every surface needs the same treatment. Suitable preparation should be considered for each material. If an old finish is unknown, avoid speculative sanding or stripping before it has been assessed. Wallpaper can be an option for selected rooms, with the wall condition checked separately from the pattern choice.

Larger homes need a sequence, not just a room total

A detached property can contain several rooms with very different daily roles. Bedrooms, a family kitchen and a landing may not all be available at the same time. Decide which spaces can be cleared together and what furniture will remain. High stairwells and upper surfaces introduce access requirements that should be mentioned early. Group rooms by practical availability rather than assuming a whole-house schedule follows a simple numerical order. The number of rooms is a useful start, but ceilings, woodwork and preparation determine the full extent of the work. Discuss timing once the surfaces, preparation and household’s needs are clear. Include any rooms that need to stay available and any preferred order for the work.

Exterior finishes and exposed woodwork

External decoration may include painted masonry, roofline boards, windows, doors and other woodwork. Larger elevations and upper sections can make access a significant part of the planning. Garden structures and delicate surfaces below the work also need protection. Product suitability, existing coatings and weather determine when the work can proceed. Painting should follow necessary repair rather than conceal a damaged component. The exterior house painting page explores those questions more closely. Include the outside items as their own list if an interior project is being considered at the same time, because the conditions and preparation will not necessarily match.

Fine work and the painting method

We use HVLP spraying for suitable trim, woodwork, kitchens and garden furniture. It can be discussed for suitable detailed items, while brush and roller remain available for traditional decoration. Airless spraying serves broad walls and ceilings where clearance and masking allow it. Spraying is an option to discuss, not the right choice for every room or piece of woodwork. Profiles, old coatings and access affect the decision. Kitchen units require an assessment of the existing material and finish in their own right. A photograph showing an attractive result elsewhere cannot determine suitability or guarantee an identical appearance on your items.

Discuss your Sevenoaks property

We also cover Swanley, Dartford and Orpington, and travel up to 40 miles from Swanley for the right job. Follow the related town pages if another property forms a separate enquiry, and use the main areas page for the complete list. Send the postcode and a summary of rooms or outside items, noting distinctive details and known concerns. You can speak to Eric during our contact hours or provide the outline through this form. A free quote begins with information about the building itself, not assumptions about what a Sevenoaks property ought to need.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT ASK

Your questions,
answered.

Have something else in mind?
Talk to Eric

Should I mention mouldings and panel doors in my enquiry?

Yes. List the details you want painted so their preparation and finish can be discussed alongside the walls.

Does an older house always need its paint stripped?

No. The condition of the existing paint and its compatibility with the new finish determine the preparation, not age alone.

Can I discuss painting a larger home in stages?

Yes. Explain which rooms can be cleared and which you need to keep using so the order of work can be discussed.

Is spraying always best for detailed woodwork?

No. HVLP spraying is available, but the item, existing finish and access need to be assessed before choosing a method.
